Taylor MacDonald: Thanks, Sean. yeah. So last week Kevin and I sat down We sat down to kind of discuss the fundamental tension between the efficiency that we're seeing with AI and the creative output or the craft, so to speak. You know, we talked a lot in a broad range about different topics, but some of the things that I recollect that he pointed out were the fundamental lack of taste that is resulting from these these tools and and the output that they're churning out maybe very verbose and completely accurate, but completely devoid of personality or humility or understanding or vulnerability and stuff like that. And so we spent a lot of time just talking about what it means to be an agency in this day and age and what are we actually selling and how do you value you know the the output of these engines. so to speak. So I think it was great conversation and it was particularly interesting because it was a slightly different format. It was more of an interview style format and I think there may be room for us to do a lot more of that in the future. Yeah, so I've got a lot of little projects going on right now. I am working on a mechanical engineering project which is kind of new for me. I'm using a 3D printer. recently bought the Bamboo Lab X2D, which I have really been enjoying. It's it's been really fun to figure out how to use some of these modeling programs and and see these creations really come to life. And I've been using AI a lot for that. It's helped me not only answer some fundamental questions, it's gave me some direction at least on early concepts and now that I'm running into well my latest challenge is some actual mechanical issues like some binding on this little linear rod that I'm trying to run through some ball bearings right now. So it's kind of coaching me through some of the nuances of that. What I have found extremely cool about this is it's sort of taking that concept of using AI to push the educational boundaries and ideas and opportunities, but taking it off the screen and bringing it into the physical world. So I found that to be extremely cool. And then the one other thing is a plug for the pocket, you know, that device that I love. You know, I I went to back to school night with the kids last night and I meant to bring it with me and I forgot. And so I thought, no, how am I going to capture this? And so what I ended up doing was I took voice memos of all seven or eight teachers that we met with last night as they were kind of going through the spiel, talking about the syllabus for that course and all this stuff. And I took the audio files and apparently in the pocket app on my phone, even without the physical device, I can upload the MP3 that I captured in that voice memo, and it immediately transcribed and summarized and gave me a full searchable rag database for the entire content of of each one of those sessions. So I think this is really cool and and it's gonna help it's gonna help keep us as a family on track as Atticus. embarks on his eighth grade at the middle school. Well, I think there's a lot to unpack there, to be honest. You covered a lot of ground in that question. What I would say first and foremost is that similar to the way you've described it, establishing some sort of balance or equilibrium in the things that you do in life, anything that you do, as long as you exercise some amount of moderation to that, that tends to bring about a greater sense of self satisfaction, at least my understanding. I think you're right. The you talked a little bit about that novelty bias where something new can be addictive and you can, you know, get really excited about that, but over time the newness wears off. And it's my understanding that's actually like a a method of self-preservation or a defense mechanism that has evolved over time. because otherwise we'd be constantly overwhelmed with stimulus, right? The problem is in modern society and as modern consumers, we're overwhelmed with stimuli constantly, all the time, everywhere. Just everything is constantly going on. And I think it's created this real bifurcated like sense of of worth and sense of need and sense of you know want. so I think there's a whole lot to unpack there. And I my perspective is fairly similar whether that coming from the position of a manager or the position of a dad. I think we need to exercise moderation in everything. I say this and I'm probably not the best candidate to speak in that regard, because I I tend to have a fairly addictive personality and I And I think ultimately what you're experiencing and what you're kind of speaking to is that all of these tools can feel very addictive, not terribly dissimilar to drugs or alcohol or other objectionable behaviors that have a real negative impact on you. I mean, we all remember the stories of like laborers and you know, across the world in internet sweatshops farming gold for 48 hours straight, drinking ball soda just to stay awake, and then they fall over dead, you know, because of a massive cardiac arrest or something. The truth is, like, everything has to be moderated to some degree. And I am hopeful that through the advancement of this technology, we'll be able to take advantage of more things like automation to remove some of those tedious requirements that we find ourselves so often doing, like checking email or, you know, opting out a text Or, you know, unsubscribing from newsletters. I mean, all these are very trivial examples, but you know, at scale and you start thinking about all the various and sundry things that you do every day, if I can offload most of that tedious work to an agent or a robot or something like that, I do it in a heartbeat. Just think if we had AI connected robots that could fold your laundry, how much time that would buy you back? It's worth every penny. So Yeah, I don't know if that's an answer to the question, but but yeah, I think I think that we should all strive to maintain a real proper work-life balance. And I think that all employers should understand that our employees aren't working for our dollars or for profit for the company, they are working for their family. They're working to put food in that child's mouth, they're working to put clothes on the backs and buy school books for the next school year. and the more often that our you know, business community can remind themselves of that, I think the better equilibrium we'll achieve as a society. that's a great question. w we're talking about vendor lock-in and we're talking about big investments that are hard to undo. This is why decoupled architecture exists. I mean, this is one of the biggest arguments in defense of Netlify. render or similar services where you have these system primitives that you can cobble together with hopefully with the expectation that they're portable and you can move them. You know, if you don't like that database product, you can move it over here. If you don't prefer that front-end component, you could remove that. You can remove the framework, you can swap out the underpinnings, you know, by separating or decoupling all the different parts of the stack. I mean this is why we moved away from monolithic architecture in general, right? Now on a more enterprise, bigger picture system as a or platform as a service or software as a service level, this the stakes are much higher. We know for a fact every single company, the amount of private equity activity, and the volatility in these services that we pay dearly for, they lock us in in ways that we can't control. It's a major risk for a business. You know, in a lot of ways, this podcast was started. as an as a response to some of the volatility in particular CMS project pro products, where they're increasing rates substantially, decreasing entitlements, pushing clients that can't afford the system directly off their services despite the fact that that client had made a sizable investment to get there and adopt that product. And it's it's not cool. I mean at at the end of the day, we know this is gonna happen. So I think it's important and prudent to build this into your plan. You know, open source software has got its issues, but at least you you have some amount of control over the scenario. Whereas once you couple yourself to these big entities and they're no longer interested in providing the product or service, they're looking for an exit, that can really significantly water down and impact the way that you are adopting those services. In the case of AI, I would recommend that you think about using or adopting services that can diversify your dependency on the models. So instead of buying a subscription to exclusively Claude or exclusively ChatGPT, maybe you should consider looking at one of the more democratized platforms like Open Router, for example, where you get access to not only the Frontier models, but also the much lower cost open weight models that are coming out of China. And being able to interoperate between those is mission critical. So my answer, my response to that is how do you design a system? You basically assume the risk that these things will shift and within a year's time, maybe a month's time, you sometimes need to pivot in fairly quickly, depending upon the economic conditions surrounding that dependency. You always need new equipment. All right, hold up. I gotta interject before yeah, I think you're about to wrap up here. f a ton of interesting stuff that you just unpacked. I think that workflow sounds extremely cool. It's almost like you're building a almost like a coach or some sort of expert professional that's riding shotgun with you and helping you understand what the different adjustments you're making in your photography might result in different outcomes, which is is amazing. I also agree that using agents to build these kind of educational harnesses or support systems and help us learn are fascinating. I think they work well for certain types of personalities like you were mine. but the subject of adult learning is so vast and varied that I think there's even more opportunity for these agents to start developing different strategies for disseminating the educational expertise or the opportunities or you know different ways of communicating that information to different individuals and meet them you know where they are with regard to their approach to learning and and requirements to kind of amassing that information. More fundamentally, what I would continue to encourage everybody to do is lean heavily into the the actual physical aspects of life. You know, the the things and and it's awesome that you used photography as an analogy here. So behind every complicated thing in life, there are some very fundamental ground truths. And once you can establish some awareness about those ground truths, either through conversing with ChatGPT in a manner where it explains it to you, or actually physically Exercising the fundamental components in a physical space so that you can better understand how that engineering happens in real life, the sooner you are to amass this level of expertise in systems knowledge. Let me give you an example using photography. When I was about 15 years old, I was in high school and I took photography as an elective class. And in that class, the teacher taught us how to build our own camera out of a cardboard box. It was awesome. I had no idea that you could do this. But fundamentally, all photography is, is a light-sensitive surface, film or paper, in the case of my example, an aperture, the little hole through which light comes into the closed dark box, and then a shutter, a thing that goes over the aperture to open and close and allow light to come in. Those three components make a camera. And one thing that I found so interesting in this experiment was that you can take a cardboard box, you can literally put a pinhole in it. You I think I fashioned like a little almost like an easel type surface on the inside of the box where I could lay the photosensitive paper. You wrap it all up, make sure there's no areas where light could penetrate the box except for that aperture, put a little piece of masking tape over the aperture, and then in a dark room or a You open the photosensitive paper. You can order the stuff on Amazon. It's literally paper that is light sensitive and it's wrapped up in this really thick, opaque, black plastic. And when you pull a sheet out, you can cut it down to size. Of course you're doing this in a dark environment so it doesn't ruin the paper. You put it inside the box, close the shutter manually and walk out to walk outside. in my case, when I was fifteen years old, I I went outside and sat down in the parking lot of our high school and put the box about five feet in front of me. manually opened the shutter and sat down. I think I sat there for probably five minutes or so. It takes a little while and you can remember those old timey photographs where they were, you know, waiting, people would have to stand still for like hours at a time, perfectly still, you know, to get the the perfect shot. This is pretty similar technology, right? So you you sit in front of it very still for about five minutes and you lean over and close up the hole and then go develop the paper. And sure enough, man, it was a picture of me sitting in front of it, you know, with my solen teenage, you know, brow. And yeah, I mean it's fascinating. I still have the picture. It's a physical, physical picture around here somewhere. So anyway, I think there's a lot to be learned from that exercise, especially when we talk about very sys sophisticated systems. You know, we live in the most modern, most advanced civilization ever to cover the earth. And It's fascinating, but it often reduces us to like packaged food or you know hyper compressed, you know, printed circuitry boards and silicon chips that are doing these crazy computations for us. And we lose sight of that underneath all of that there were very foundational principles that govern our our physical world. And and so I think there's an opportunity. And you're exercising this too by unplugging and going on vacation for a couple of weeks and just chilling and being out in nature and listening to the crickets and pontificating on what the human existence is. I think it's really important that we don't lose sight of that. Thanks, Sean. yeah, so what's next? I don't know. things are moving so fast. Every day there's a new acquisition or a new advancement, a new model, a new major new story relative to this stuff. So I'll stop short of saying what we will be talking about next week is this. But one thing that I found super interesting, I listened to a podcast by a guy. Let me see if I can find the link. So it was about Some of the coming financial problems that we're going to be facing in the event that these AI companies fail and the economic fallout. You know, back in 2008, we had these this financial crisis with banks, and the banks are too big to fail, so the organ so the government had to bail them out in order to protect the economy. Well, apparently a lot of these private equity firms who own very foundational and important. Assets such as life insurance have been dealing private credit out to the startups that are pioneering some of this technology. If the startups fail, that puts a lot of those life insurance policies and premiums in jeopardy. And the result would be a massive impact to the economy on a state-by-state basis. And so the argument that this guy, his name is David Dayen, D-A-Y-E-N. The argument that he's making on the American Prospect article that I just read is that this could have significantly terrifying and and and dismal consequences if the bubble were to burst. So probably worth talking a little bit about that and at least being honest about what all that stuff means so that we aren't caught with our pants down. So Anyway, Sean, thanks so much.
